" DEFINE OR BE DEFINED " BY GO BLANSON
" Accept no one's definition of your life; define yourself " - Robert Frost
Hello Everyone, this week's Article will require you to " DEFINE OR BE DEFINED."
Many people feel that since everything has a definition, everything and everybody needs to
be DEFINED. Well, my question is," Who is going to do the " DEFINING?" Also, WHO and
WHAT needs to be " DEFINED ?" You see, it seems like we are living in a world where it's
either " DEFINE or BE DEFINED !" I guess it started in School, when the teacher had us DEFINE
this word and that word. It started the " DOMINO EFFECT " of people trying to DEFINE not only
words, but people, places, thoughts, and things as well. I don't know about you, but the only
person I want DEFINING me[ who I am or who I can be ] is me !
Just like it is true that one shouldn't DEFINE a book by its title or cover, I feel that it is an error
to try and DEFINE a person by their appearance, sex, race, religion, or their past. While these
things are sometimes good at helping us understand a person, they aren't necessarily what
we should use to " DEFINE " the person or the person's TRUE WORTH. Additionally, how
would you feel if someone tried to DEFINE you based only your race or sex? Sadly, many
times, this is exactly what is being done.People are DEFINING others based on flimsy facts
and vague information about them. This is another one of the reasons why I feel that you
need to " DEFINE or BE DEFINED." Furthermore, I strongly feel that if you do not have your own
DEFINITION as to who you are, people will quickly supply you with their own slanted
DEFINITION of you[ a very incorrect one, I might add ].in closing, I will leave everyone with " The Story of the Golden Eagle."
The Eagle never was able to " DEFINE " who he was, so he was " DEFINED " by his circumstances and others !i HOPE YOU ENJOY THE FOLLOWING STORY! A man found an eagle’s egg and put it in the nest of a backyard hen.
The eaglet hatched with the brood of chicks and grew up with them.
All his life, he did what the backyard chickens did, thinking he was a backyard chicken. He
scratched the earth for worms and insects. He clucked and cackled. And he would thrash his
wings and fly a few feet in the air.
Years passed and the eagle grew old. One day he saw a magnificent bird flying high in the
sky. It glided in graceful majesty among the powerful wind currents, with scarcely a beat of its
strong, golden wings.
The old eagle looked up in awe and asked “Who’s that?”
“That’s the eagle, the king of the birds”, said his neighbor, the chicken.
“That would be so wonderful, to be able to soar like that!” said the old eagle.
But, the eagle lived and died a chicken, for that’s who he thought he was. Adapted from “The Song of the Bird”, Anthony deMello
